About three days before the first Roots Picnic, announcement, I started getting antsy.
Isn’t it getting close to the lineup announcement?
Who could they possible have this year?
Who is going to headline?
And then *BAM*! Back to back mind-blowing news: The Roots Picnic is moving to the Belmont Plateau and JAŸ-Z with The Roots was the first headliner announced. I can’t imagine that anyone saw either of those things coming. Soon after the full lineup was announced, the excitement quickly set in. Erykah Badu! De La Soul! Brandy! Another weekend of can’t miss performances.
Here are 3 more things we are excited about for Roots Picnic 2026:
1. PHILLY! PHILLY! PHILLY!
We at Philly Soul Now particularly love how the Roots Picnic has been including artists from Philadelphia to perform. In recent years we’ve seen Jermaine Dolly, Leeyuh Neptune, Lady Alma and SNACKTIME take the stages. This year we’re hyped to see Beano French and Amir Ali represent. Bilal who is celebrating 25 years of his debut album Soul Sista is also on this year’s lineup.
Returning for the third year in a row is Adam Blackstone with another star studded set. This time he’ll be leading the celebration of the Waiting to Exhale Soundtrack that will include Yolanda Adams, Ledisi and Andra Day.
And what’s a day in the park without some of the greatest DJs from the 215? This year there’s DJ Aktive, DJ Diamond Kuts, DJ Doc B, the legendary DJ Cash Money and the one and only DJ Jazzy Jeff who’s bringing his Magnificent Block Party. It’s about to feel like old times at The Plateau!
2. Baller Alert and Front Porch Present a Celebration of 50 Years of Go-Go
We love that they are bringing Go-Go back to the Picnic this year. It just makes sense! Last year we got a taste when the Backyard Band featuring CeeLo Green performed. This year, viral sensation live music series Front Porch along with Baller Alert celebrate 50 years of the genre hosted by Noochie & Kenny Burns. If you’re not familiar with Go-Go, this is the perfect atmosphere to get educated.
3. Surprise Guests
Jermaine Dupri and FRIENDS??? Don’t threaten us with a good time!
There is often a sweet element of surprise at the Roots Picnic. We’re not just talking about lineup teasers like “… and more” and “… & Friends”. Artists and entertainers who come just to attend the Roots Picnic come there to enjoy the great vibes throughout the weekend just like everyone else. With that being said, with any and everybody being there, anybody can pop out onstage.
