The Roots Picnic is making its return after a two year hiatus this weekend but the fun doesn’t stop there. Whether you are looking for somewhere to kick it after the Roots Picnic or are just looking for somewhere to party this weekend, you definitely want to check out any of the following events:
Saturday, June 4:
Kiss ‘n Grind at The Fillmore
This collaboration between legendary DJ Vikter Duplaix and longtime Philly event curator Flygirrl is more than a party; to borrow from one of its previous partiers, Dave Chappelle, “It’s a celebration”! This party promises reggae, house, hip hop and overall good vibes. Alongside DJ Vikter Duplaix, attendees can expect to hear music spun by mega hit producer Just Blaze, and worldwide known Philly’s own Rich Medina. Live performances include Reggae legend Lady G, Hip Hop legend Pharaoahe Monch and a very special tribute celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the essential House classic “Follow Me” with performer Aly-Us. DJ Aktive’s Chill Vibes: The Karaoke Experience featuring Musiq Soulchild
You may remember when we interviewed DJ Aktive back in 2019 when he collaborated with Musiq Soulchild, the first artist he ever toured with. Now as Janet Jackson’s touring DJ, he’s still bringing great experiences to Philly’s music scene. This Saturday after they both rock the Roots Picnic, he and Musiq Soulchild are back together again with Chill Vibes: The Karaoke Experience at Brooklyn Bowl. Not only can you bowl a few games while listening to DJ Diamond Kuts, Killsing, and Selekta XXX, you and your crew can sing karaoke backed up by DJ Aktive himself. Musiq Soulchild will also be giving a live performance and maybe get in on some karaoke as well. Whoknows (pun intended)? For tickets, click here.
Sunday, June 5
Sugar Honey Ice Tea Jam Session at Brooklyn Bowl
We are so excited to see jam sessions coming back to Philadelphia (see also Studio Wednesdays). Making its debut Roots Picnic weekend is Sugar Honey Ice Tea. The jam session was inspired by the legendary and greatly missed Black Lily event in the early 2000’s that helped launch the careers of many artists today including members of The Roots. Hosted by Beano French and Mouse Jones this jam session promises to have some of the best artists in Philly’s soul music scene hands down. Backed by the band Marshall Road, performers include Brandon Pain, Mare, Lucas Wolfe, Natalie Imani and more. For tickets, visit sugarhoneyit.info.
Future x Sounds Presents The Official Roots Picnic Jam Session Led by Adam Blackstone
Hosted by Eric Roberson, the Future x Sounds Roots Picnic Afterparty boasts an incredible lineup of Philly artists, surprise guests and a who’s who of world famous musicians. Led by Adam Blackstone (music director for Justin Timberlake, Super Bowl halftime show, the Oscars, you name it) and The Origin Band, the afterparty includes performances by Philly Freeway, Noel Scales, Verbosity, GoGo Morrow and more.
