This time last year, West Philadelphia born and raised Beano French was on the cusp of debuting his first EP, Just Beano, to the world. “I just remember a lot of nervousness and excitement” Beano tells us. “Up until then I had only released two songs prior to the EP, “Darling Baby” and “Monday Morning.” People seemed to really like them but this was my first complete body of work that they were going to hear.” After performing live in front of numerous audiences, often as a featured singer with fellow Philly artist rapper Chill Moody, he was finally taking the spotlight with his own project. Much to the surprise of him and his team, the EP debuted at #4 on iTunes the day it was released. “ I think it exceeded everyone’s expectations. I don’t think any of us saw that coming. That was Philly.” says Beano about his high charting debut. “I got so much support, it was unbelievable. It’s unheard of for an independent artist- no label backing, no radio airplay- to debut on iTunes that high.” What was even more surprising to him was what happened next. “People were sending me videos of them singing my songs, telling me what songs were their favorites after only two, three days; Not just from Philly but across the country. I was so surprised.” Not too long after the EP’s debut, the video for fan favorite “Monday Morning” began rotation on MTV Jams and Revolt TV.
Almost a year to the day later, Beano French will be celebrating the one year anniversary of Just Beano this Sunday at Johnny Brenda’s. Beano says one of the things he’s learned within the past year since dropping the EP is to not get too comfortable. At a time where there has been plenty of bold proclamations about who reigns supreme in R&B, Beano is less concerned about titles and more concerned about where the genre is at the moment. “I’ve been very vocal about where I feel R&B is. I feel like people don’t sing about love anymore. It’s like ‘I wanna be a savage’ or ‘I’m cheating on you’. It’s cool to have those records because some people do live that lifestyle but there’s also a side of R&B where a woman wants to be talked to, loved and respected. It’s cool to make songs but we have got to get back to making music that people can play any and everywhere that will stand the test of time. Make something that five years later a DJ can still put into their set. There are so many people that want so many accolades that haven’t put in the work yet to be what they are trying to call themselves. I wouldn’t call myself the “King” or that I run the city. There’s a lot of work that comes with titles. We are just scratching the surface, all of us! The only people I feel can even claim a title are Tank, Chris Brown and Usher. Other than that, everyone else still has a lot of work to do.”
Although Beano shys away from being considered “that guy” when it comes to being one of the most key influencers in the Philly Soul scene, there’s no denying that he’s contributed to keeping the live music scene thriving in a great way. His monthly open mic event Rents Due at Bourbon and Branch is now in its third year and has proven to be one of the most anticipated nights of live soul music in the city. When asked what could a first time attendee expect at Rents Due, Beano says all you need is a love for great live music. “They can expect a straight Philly vibe of great musicians, great singers, and a great DJ. Our musicians tour around the world with artist like Common, Estelle, Maxwell, and Ro James. These guys are some of the most well versed musicians in Philadelphia and they’re the young boys. I give all praise to our old heads that groomed us like Man Man who’s one of the biggest supporters of the next generation of artists and musicians. You can see some of the best singers. It’s been growing to the point where it’s become a staple in the city. “
What’s next for Beano? “A lot of new music. I’ve been working very very hard. I’ve been being quiet and it’s been hard keeping everything to myself but it’s needed. I have a lot of new music as well as more videos and visuals from the album on the way. I learned that you just have to keep your head down and keep grinding. 2019 is all about leveling it up.”
